I thought it was some boabab tree, but it was identified by professor George C. Yang of Adamson University as a cuipo tree, Cavanillesia platanifolia, from Central America and northern South America. It is a member of the bombax family.
According to Hawaii50trees blog,, it has a soft wood similar to balsa.
