Heliconia Psittacorum

Their look like colorful small bananas. Though they were formerly classified under the family Musaceae which include bananas, they are now listed under the separate family of Heliconiaceae..

A pair of white butterflies

I saw this pair of butterflies (or moths?!) in UP Clarkfield. I think it is mating season and they are coming out more. Unfortunately, unlike the Danaids, these types prefer to fold their wings vertically, making them look like leaves. Their wing uppersides are much better to look at, but you will seldom catch them in full glory.
What is remarkable in my photo is the clarity of the veins in the wings. I think this is the mating season for this butterfly type. I saw a group of five or seven flitting together among the hedge plants.

Kamantigi, impatiens balsamina

This plant is a favorite for making teas! And children, including adults love to pop the ripe pods, which explodes when touched, earning the common name Touch-Me-Not!

Cynometra ramifulla, oringen, balitbitan

What attracted my attention were the translucent silvery bracts.

It is to be noted that some Cynometra species are threatened by habitat loss. The best guess right now for the species shown above was provided by gcy.

Surinam Cherry, eugenia uniflora

I was stumped in indentifying the fruits in this photo of my Australian based Facebook friend I submitted the photo to another Facebook group whose mission is to conserve Philippine native trees and plants.

It is a surinam cherry, and according to the references is not a true cherry. Advise is to pick the blood-reddish ripe ones as this is the best tasting form.

A variegated arrow root plant.

I thought it was a stromanthe, but it is not! It is a perennial variegated arrowroot plant, a former important food crop for its starch.

Trees: fishtail caryota palm tree.

Here is a palm tree, common name fisthtail palm, with multiple seed clusters looking like Afro Hair styles! The tree is quite irritating to touch, and some kids may end in the hospital with burning sensation if the seeds clusters are touched.

The Philippine variety is caryota cumingii. Here is a caryota palm in SM North.
