Asclepias physocarpa, swan plant, balloon plant

We used to play with these plants when we were young, we squeezed the balls or even them and we are glad nobody tried to taste its liquid goo as it is poisonous! After searching in google for plants with scrotum, plants with balls, we were rewarded with a link (cant remember the exact links) to our reference (see table)

This plant is a favorite of the grand monarch butterfly. The fact that the plant is alkoloidal endows the butterflies their unpalabity to predators such as birds. Our specimen comes from our late beloved sister's farm at Don Salvador Benedicto.

This plant is NOT native to the Philippines. It is from Southeast Africa!

Cordyline terminalis/fruticosa, baston de san jose., tungkod-pare

A favorite of landscape architects in the Philippines, this plant has nice pinkish reddish-brown leaves. Most of the photos here were shot in an early morning, we should have shot them in mid-morning to mid-afternoon when the sun is out to highlight their contrasting colors!

Here is a close up of flowers of the bastons:

Note: the name cordyline terminalis replaces the old name cordyline furticosa.

Here is a white crepe myrtle I saw today, July 21, 2012 at the sidewalk of the soon to be demolished Manila Seedling Bank.

My sister, an artist, has captured the inner beauty of crepe myrtle! Please visit the related links below.

Zingeber Spectabile, beehive ginger flower, gingerwort

This is an unusual flower from the ginger family.

This easily grows in the tropics and I have found them at cool Buenos Aires Resort, Salvador Benedicto towns and even at our home, planted by my sister in Bacolod City, Negros Island where I took the photos.

It is reported that the small flowers which grow in pairs, last only for a day! but the main flower bulb inflorescence can last for months as a cut flower!

Here is a second set of photos from virtually the same place we shot last year!

Herbs: Foeniculum vulgare, fennel, hara, anis

I had an interesting discussion among Facebook friends about the identification of this plant. Some saying it was dill, others saying it is Fennel, and a few says it is Rosemary!
Finally, today, I read Dr. Godofredo Stuart's excellent site and discovered that the photo closely matches with our unnamed herb, which tastes great like freshly ripe mangoes!

Flowers: Mirabilis Jalapa 2, four Oclock flowers growing wild.

I was struck by the similarity of these flowers (weeds) growing wild near the abandoned BLISS Mart building to the Mirabilis Jalapa flowers we featured before. There were yellow and red healthy flowers with seeds! It brought back memories of the times I was a kid, collecting and playing with the hard seeds.
