Statues and markers: Dinalupihan First line of defense of Bataan.

I saw this sculpture of soldiers when we passed along the way from Pampanga to Mt. Samat of Bataan. It is a monument to the brave Filipino and USAFFE soldiers who manned the first line of defense at Layac junction in Dinalupihan, Bataan against the invading Japanese forces on January 6, 1942.

I think the barrel of the machine gun has been bent? It does not look realistic as a weapon. I was riding at the back of a motorcycle and found it inconvenient and dangerous to shoot since you have to release your grip on the motorcycle momentarily. We did not stop to take more and better photos. This image was cropped, but the result has sufficient resolution.

Butterfly at Dunsulan Falls in Bataan

The entrance fee was fifty pesos per person at the Pilar resort where Dunsulan falls is. They give you an official receipt. The Dunsulan waterfall itself is small, not as spectacular as the one in Don Salvador Benedicto. But my wandering spirits was lifted with the sighting of this black butterfly:

Melastoma flower spp.

I still need to find the exact scientific name of this plant. They grow profusely in the high mountains town of Don Salvador Benedicto. The leaves have short hairs. Our specimen has almost oval leaves.

I am identifying it as a melastoma rotundifolium. The flowers look like those of tibouchina plants.

Sample test shots with the CANON SX50HS

I got new camera, the Canon SX50HS superzoom model, which has a maximum of 50x zooming range. It is able to take more photos than my HS50EXR superzoom camera (30x maximum zoom range). the Canon was able to focus on far objects quickly, and the photos seems sharper. Here are some test shots taken yesterday and today November 18, 2013.

Macopa [syzgium malacenssis] tree in Boro-boro Springs

I have identified the tree in Boro-boro springs at Monterry Resort in Bgy. Alangilan, Bacolod City. This tree has tambis looking fruits, but is more fleshy. This post supersedes a previous one on makopa.

The photos in Dr. StuartXchange is of tambis, showing these two fruits are easily confused with each other.
